A Second Chance at a New Beginning

Stewart’s life has not always been easy. In school, Stewart was bullied for dyslexia. He got into fights and was suspended often. That disruption in learning made the transition to adult life challenging.

When it was time to get a job, Stewart applied to Melwood, but was quickly let go for not meeting performance standards.

“The first time I came to Melwood I was still young. I wanted to party. I didn’t understand responsibility,” Williams said.

Williams tried working at other employers, but continually experienced harassment, bullying behavior and discrimination because of his disability.

Wanting and needing a significant change, Williams re-applied to Melwood and was placed at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. There, he cleans bathrooms, classrooms, the wrestling gym, and the pool deck, all of which require specialized care and attention to detail.

Today, Williams is exceptionally proud of the work he performs. He has goals to excel both personally and professionally and enjoys being part of a team that contributes to the overall success of the United States Navy.

“Melwood helped me find responsibility. The first time I worked at Melwood I really messed up, but this second chance has given me a sense of confidence,” Williams said. “My whole life, everyone has been holding my disability over my head but I’m just a regular human being. At Melwood, people focus on my efforts and attention to detail, and they tell me they appreciate me.”
