Custodial

At the heart of the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building—one of the most secure facilities in the country—is a team of 53 custodial professionals led by Melwood Enterprises Project Manager Mehalon. Under Mehalon’s leadership, this dedicated team, composed primarily of individuals with disabilities, cleans more than 1.2 million square feet of space, all while supporting the mission-critical work of the FBI to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.

Mehalon, who has served in this role for five years, brings a wealth of experience in hospitality management and healthcare operations to his work with Melwood Enterprises. But it’s his talent for team building and human connection that truly sets him apart. “It’s not about the work but about how we get the work done,” Mehalon said. “We have a very cohesive team here. It’s important to me that every member of our team is very hands-on, involved in the mission, and feels valued.”

Meeting and exceeding federal standards

The scope of responsibility of Melwood Enterprises’ work at the FBI site is enormous. In addition to keeping spaces clean for FBI agents and support staff, the team is also tasked with cleaning an indoor gun range and a medical station that can quickly become a trauma care unit in the event of an emergency. Every task must be completed with precision to meet exacting federal standards.

Under Mehalon’s direction, excellence is the norm. Accountability, pride, and mutual respect are central to how his team operates, which ensures Melwood Enterprises employees not only meet, but exceeded, client expectations. Foundational to this driving philosophy is Mehalon’s belief that every individual has something important to offer.

The secret to managing a successful team

“I set high expectations for both my staff and the quality of service in this building,” Mehalon said. “It’s not about whether someone has a disability—it’s about their drive to contribute and making sure every person feels respected and valued. The Melwood Enterprises team takes great pride in knowing the FBI truly recognizes and appreciates our role in supporting their mission.”

Through his leadership, Mehalon is doing more than managing operations. He is fostering a workplace culture where everyone is empowered to succeed. In a facility known for discretion and discipline, his work behind the scenes is making a powerful, visible difference, both for the people he manages and in support of the mission of the FBI.

It’s not about the work but about how we get the work done. We have a very cohesive team here. It’s important to me that every member of our team is very hands-on, involved in the mission, and feels valued.
